Today’s phrasal verb: take after somebody

🤩 Today’s phrasal verb is a really useful one, especially if you’re taking IELTS or a Cambridge English Exam. It is: to take after somebody. It means to look or behave like an older member of your family, particularly your mum or dad. For example, everybody tells me I really take after my mum.

Who do you take after and why?

I have some exercises for you to try. Fill the gaps:

Physical Resemblance:

  • Sarah really __ ___ mother. They have the same beautiful blue eyes and wavy hair."

  • It's amazing how much David ___ ___ his grandfather. They could be mistaken for twins when they were the same age.

    Behavioural Resemblance:

  • Alex ___ ____ his father in terms of his work ethic. He's just as dedicated and hardworking.

  • Laura ___ ___ her aunt when it comes to her love for travel. She's always planning her next adventure.

In each of these examples, "take after somebody" is used to highlight the similarities between one person and another, whether it's in terms of physical traits, behaviors, interests, values, talents, or other aspects of their personality or life.
